Coffee is a beverage that is enjoyed by people all over the world. It is often seen as a way to start the day, but it can also be a great way to connect with others.

There are a few reasons why coffee can help us to connect with others. First, coffee shops are often social places. They are places where people go to meet friends, work, or just relax. This makes them a great setting for conversation. I had a friend tell me once that they invited someone to a coffee shop to talk about some important things and when they both got there, they discovered that neither drinks coffee (mindboggling!), but they just knew it was a place to go to have good conversation.

Second, coffee is a relaxing beverage. It can help us to slow down and focus on the present moment. This can make it easier to connect with others on a deeper level. #coffeeandconnection

Third, coffee can be a great conversation starter. There are endless topics that can be discussed over a cup of coffee. This can help us to learn more about each other and build relationships. #coffeeandlearning

The Benefits of Coffee Conversation

There are many benefits to #coffeeconversation. Here are a few of them:

It can help us to build relationships. When we talk to others over coffee, we get to know them better. We learn about their interests, their experiences, and their values. This can help us to build stronger relationships with them. When I first moved to Washington, DC more than 15 years ago, I was bombarded by these weird requests to meet at coffeeshops. Lets just say it was not common where I come from! Through that I got to know so many people.

It can help us to learn new things. When we talk to others over coffee, we are exposed to new ideas and perspectives. As long as you are coming with an open mind, those times of conversation over a cup of joe this can help you to learn new things and grow as individuals.

It can help us to relax and de-stress. Coffee can be a great way to take a break from our busy lives. It can help us to relax and de-stress. This can make us more productive and creative. Because of the constant soft chatter, I feel like I could easily use all of the notes in a sticky pad from ideas that pop into my head…or I guess a regular notebook would be just fine! #coffeeandcreativity. Oh, a sidenote. If you can't get away to a coffeeshop, my wife introduced me to something called Coffitivity where you can get all the noise without the hassle!

How to Have a Great Coffee Conversation

If you want to have a great coffee conversation, there are a few things you can do:

Choose the right setting. Coffee shops are a great setting for conversation, but there are other options as well. You could meet at a park, a library, or even your own home.

Be prepared to talk. Think about some topics that you would like to discuss. This will help you to avoid awkward silences.

Be a good listener. When someone is talking to you, really listen to what they have to say. Don't just wait for your turn to talk.

Ask questions. Asking questions is a great way to keep the conversation going. It also shows that you are interested in what the other person has to say.

Be yourself. Don't try to be someone you're not. People can tell when you're being fake, and it will make the conversation less enjoyable.

So next time you're looking for a way to connect with someone, reach out for a cup of coffee. It's a great way to start a conversation, learn something new, and build a relationship.

Whether you're meeting a friend, a new colleague, or a potential business partner, coffee is a great way to break the ice and get to know each other. So next time you're planning a meeting, consider setting it up at a coffee shop. You might just be surprised at how much you enjoy the conversation.

Coffee is enjoyed by people all over the world. It is often seen as a way to start the day, but it can also be a great way to connect with others and learn about different cultures.

The Cultural Significance of Coffee

Coffee has a long and rich history, and it is deeply embedded in many cultures around the world. In some cultures, coffee is seen as a sacred beverage, while in others it is simply a part of everyday life.

The way that coffee is prepared and consumed can vary greatly from culture to culture. For example, in Italy, coffee is often served as espresso, while in Turkey it is served as Turkish coffee. In Ethiopia, coffee is often roasted over an open fire and served with spices and called a “coffee ceremony”.

How Coffee Can Help Us Understand Different Cultures

Coffee can be a great way to learn about different cultures. When we travel to a new country, we can visit a coffee shop and order a cup of coffee. This is a great way to start a conversation with the barista and learn about the local culture.

We can also learn about different cultures by reading about the history of coffee in different countries. This can help us to understand the cultural significance of coffee and how it has shaped the cultures of different countries.

Here are some specific examples of how coffee can help us understand different cultures:

In Ethiopia, coffee is considered to be a sacred beverage. It is believed that the coffee plant was discovered by a shepherd named Kaldi, who noticed that his goats became more energetic after eating the berries from the coffee plant. But maybe someone switched his ‘normal’ goats with screaming goats overnight?? I remember the first time I travelled to Ethiopia for work. We were driving out of Addis Ababa to visit a project site, and all of a sudden the driver pulled off to the side of the road before we had really even gotten out of the city. I was very confused. But, I am happy to report that we stopped for coffee at a tiny little side of the road shop that had a dozen cheap plastic chairs and piping hot coffee in tiny traditional cups. I fell in love.

In Turkey, coffee is often served in small cups called "finjans." The coffee is brewed in a special pot called a "cezve" and is served with sugar cubes.

In Italy, coffee is often served as espresso. Espresso is a strong, concentrated coffee that is made by forcing hot water through finely-ground coffee beans. Just make sure that on your way to get your espresso you drive a vespa, because that just seems right.

How to Use Coffee to Connect with Different Cultures

If you are interested in learning about different cultures, coffee can be a great way to connect with people from different parts of the world. Here are a few tips on how to use coffee to connect with different cultures:

Visit a coffee shop in a different neighborhood. This is a great way to experience a new culture and to meet people from different backgrounds. When I lived in Washington, DC, I frequented Sidamo, a small Ethiopian coffee shop (that also happens to have delicious food). They even roasted the coffee in the middle of the shop and it added a nice touch to the atmosphere.

Talk to the barista. The barista is a great source of information about the local culture and about the coffee that they are serving.

Ask questions. Don't be afraid to ask questions about the coffee or about the local culture. People are usually happy to share their knowledge with others. You may or may not get this at your local big chain coffee shop, but smaller shops are part of the third wave coffee trend and likely have way more to tell you about the coffees they serve…perhaps more than you want to know 

Be open-minded. Be willing to try new things and to learn about new cultures. I will readily admit that I am a creature of habit and operate on the principle that if I liked it once, I am happy and content to just get the same thing over and over. But rarely in life have I regretted trying something new or branching out.

Whatever you do, just keep yourself in a place to be curious. Observe, ask questions, try new things. This will help you to better appreciate and enjoy the massive world around you!

What do you think? How have you learned about new cultures and countries through coffee? Or, what was your favorite experience enjoying coffee in a new place? Leave a comment…and while you are at it, I have a delightful Ethiopian Sidamo that I am roasting right now with notes of Brown Sugar, Dark Chocolate & Floral with a Medium Body and a Low Acidity. Come buy a bag! Use promo code "Sidamo15" to get 15% off your bag. Hurry up as the promo expires Cinderalla style on August 21st!

Conversation is a fundamental human skill that allows us to connect with others, build relationships, and learn new things. But for many people, conversation can be a daunting task. They may be afraid of saying the wrong thing, or they may simply not know how to start or keep a conversation going.

If you're one of those people, don't worry. You're not alone. With a little practice, you can learn the art of conversation and become a more confident communicator.

Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Start with a good opening. When you're meeting someone new, the first few seconds are crucial. Make a good impression by starting with a strong opening. This could be a simple compliment, a funny anecdote, or a question about the other person's interests. It is said that most people size you up in the first few seconds so lead with kindness and curiosity.

Be a good listener. One of the most important aspects of conversation is listening. When you're listening to someone else, really pay attention to what they're saying. Ask questions, offer feedback, and show that you're interested in what they have to say.

Ask questions. Asking questions is a great way to keep a conversation going. It shows that you're interested in the other person and that you want to learn more about them. Ask open-ended questions that require more than a yes or no answer. Interrogation is not conversation...but if you are trying to interrogate, then by all means go ahead :)

Share stories. People love to hear stories. Sharing stories is a great way to connect with others and to make your conversations more interesting. Choose stories that are relevant to the conversation and that will engage the other person. But, be careful on this point. It can be tempting to offer your own story to every point someone makes…that can get annoying. But its equally annoying if someone deflects away from themselves all the time. Some reciprocity is a good thing.

Be yourself. The most important thing is to be yourself. Don't try to be someone you're not. People can tell when you're being fake, and it will make the conversation feel forced. Just relax, be yourself, and enjoy the conversation. Honestly, we are all a little weird in some way. Just embrace that you are different.

Here are some additional tips for improving your conversation skills:

Pay attention to your body language. Your body language can say a lot about you, so it's important to be aware of it. Make eye contact, smile, and nod your head to show that you're listening.

Be aware of your tone of voice. Your tone of voice can also convey a lot of information. Speak clearly and at a moderate pace.

Be aware of your environment. The environment can also affect the way a conversation goes. Choose a quiet place where you won't be interrupted.

Practice. The more you practice, the better you'll become at conversation. So get out there and start talking to people!

Conclusion

Conversation is a skill that can be learned and improved with practice. I am not 100% there, but I am growing and by following these tips, you too can become a more confident and effective communicator. So get out there and start talking!

Conversation is a universal human experience, but the way we talk to each other can vary depending on where we are in the world. This is because our culture, our language, and our customs all play a role in how we communicate.

In this blog post, we'll explore the relationship between geography and conversation. We'll look at how different cultures approach conversation, and we'll discuss some of the factors that can influence the way we talk to each other.

Cultural Differences in Conversation

One of the most obvious ways that geography affects conversation is through cultural differences. Different cultures have different norms and expectations when it comes to conversation. For example, in some cultures, it's considered rude to interrupt someone, while in others it's perfectly acceptable. In some cultures, it's common to make eye contact when you're talking to someone, while in others it's considered disrespectful.

These cultural differences can make it difficult to communicate effectively with people from other cultures. If you're not aware of the cultural norms, you may say or do something that is considered offensive or rude. This can make the conversation awkward and uncomfortable for everyone involved.

I remember one of the early conversations I had with a new colleague when traveling overseas for work. I didn't realize how important it was to ask about another's family at the outset of a conversation, something I had not usually done in a work context. I wanted to go to a meeting and get things done and in my narrow understanding at the time, I could not conceive how it would help our work to chat about families. But, I quickly learned that its one of the best ways to build rapport.

The Role of Language

Another way that geography affects conversation is through language. The language we speak shapes the way we think and the way we communicate. For example, in some languages, there are different words for "you" depending on your relationship to the person you're talking to. This can make it difficult to translate conversations between languages, as the same word can have different meanings in different cultures.

The way we use language can also be influenced by our geography. For example, people who live in cold climates tend to use more concise language, while people who live in warm climates tend to use more expressive language. This is because the climate can affect our mood and our energy levels, which in turn affects the way we communicate.

Other Factors That Affect Conversation

In addition to culture and language, there are other factors that can affect the way we talk to each other. These include our age, our gender, our social status, and our personality. For example, young people tend to be more informal in their conversations than older people. Men and women tend to have different communication styles, and people with different social statuses may use different words and phrases.

Our personality can also affect the way we talk to each other. For example, people who are shy may be less likely to start conversations, while people who are outgoing may be more likely to interrupt others.

The way we talk to each other is shaped by a variety of factors, including our geography, our culture, our language, our age, our gender, our social status, and our personality. By understanding these factors, we can become more effective communicators and build better relationships with people from all over the world.

The way we talk to each other is shaped by the language we use. The words we choose, the way we structure our sentences, and the tone of our voice all contribute to the way our conversations are perceived.

In this blog post, we'll explore the relationship between language and conversation. We'll look at how the language we use can affect the way we communicate, and we'll discuss some tips for using language effectively in conversation.

The Importance of Language

Language is a powerful tool that can be used to build relationships, influence others, and share our ideas. In conversation, language is used to convey information, build rapport, and achieve our goals.

The words we choose can have a significant impact on the way our conversations are received. For example, using jargon or technical language can make our conversations inaccessible to others. On the other hand, using too much slang or informal language can make us seem unprofessional or uneducated.

The way we structure our sentences can also affect the way our conversations are perceived. For example, using long, complex sentences can make our conversations difficult to follow (I am told I suffer from this from time to time!). On the other hand, using short, simple sentences can make our conversations seem choppy or boring.

The tone of our voice can also have a significant impact on the way our conversations are received. For example, using a loud or angry tone can make us seem aggressive or threatening. I asked my wife to let me know if my tone is starting to sound agitated so that I can moderate how I am speaking. On the other hand, using a soft or timid tone can make us seem unsure of ourselves.

Tips for Using Language Effectively in Conversation

There are a few tips that can help you use language effectively in conversation.

Be clear and concise. Use language that is easy to understand and follow.

Be specific. Avoid using generalities or vague language.

Be appropriate. Use language that is appropriate for the context of the conversation.

Be respectful. Avoid using language that is offensive or insulting.

Be aware of your audience. Tailor your language to your audience.

The language we use can have a significant impact on the way our conversations are perceived. By following the tips above, you can use language effectively in conversation to build relationships, influence others, and achieve your goals.

At Buck's Coffee Co, we believe in two core principles that drive our passion for coffee: remarkable quality and remarkable service. Our journey through the world of coffee allows us to connect with the unique stories, cultures, and flavors that each region has to offer. Today, we are excited to introduce you to one of our exceptional offerings that embodies these principles perfectly – El Volcan Central Blend.

A Symphony of Central American Flavors

El Volcan Central Blend is a harmonious fusion of carefully selected Central American coffee beans, roasted to perfection. The name itself, which translates to "The Volcano Blend," encapsulates the rich volcanic soils and ideal altitudes where these beans flourish. With this blend, we've captured the essence of Central America in every sip.

Swiss Water Process Decaffeination: A Pure and Clean Choice

But what makes this blend even more special is that it's decaffeinated using the Swiss Water Process. This method is the gold standard in decaffeination, known for preserving the coffee's intricate flavors without any chemicals. Instead, it relies on the magic of water, time, and temperature to gently remove the caffeine while keeping the essence of the coffee intact.

Notes That Will Delight Your Senses

The cupping notes of El Volcan Central Blend are a testament to its exceptional quality:

- Smores: This blend welcomes you with the warm, inviting aroma of graham cracker, marshmallow, and chocolate. It's like sitting by a campfire, roasting marshmallows under the starry night sky.

- Orange Peel: As you take your first sip, the zesty brightness of orange peel dances on your taste buds. It adds a delightful citrusy twist that balances the blend's sweetness.

- Blueberry: The subtle, fruity undertones of blueberry elevate this coffee to a whole new level of complexity. It's a pleasant surprise with each sip, like discovering hidden treasures in your cup.

- Caramel: To round off the experience, the caramel notes provide a comforting, velvety finish. It's like a sweet, comforting hug in a mug.

A Crowd-Pleaser That Speaks for Itself

El Volcan Central Blend has garnered a reputation as a crowd-pleaser. Its exceptional flavor profile has made it one of the most beloved offerings in our collection, and it's a coffee that we work diligently to keep in stock. Don't just take our word for it – even the most discerning coffee lovers, like my dad, have declared it a "great cup of coffee."

In each sip of El Volcan Central Blend, you can taste the passion of the Central American coffee farmers, the craftsmanship of our roasters, and the commitment to quality that defines Buck's Coffee Co. Experience the magic of El Volcan Central Blend for yourself.
Conversation is a complex process that involves many different parts of the brain. When we talk to someone, our brains have to do a lot of work to process the language, understand the meaning, and respond appropriately. I feel like every time I speak in another language and am trying to listen to someone speaking to me my brain is about 10 words behind…not helpful to keep me in the conversation.

The Parts of the Brain Involved in Conversation

The parts of the brain involved in conversation include:

The temporal lobe, which is responsible for processing auditory information.

The frontal lobe, which is responsible for planning and executing speech.

The parietal lobe, which is responsible for understanding the meaning of language.

The limbic system, which is involved in emotion and social interaction.

Based on that, maybe I have some temporal and parietal lobe issues? Anyways…

How the Brain Processes Language

When we hear someone speak, the sound waves travel to our ears and are converted into electrical signals by the auditory nerve. These signals are then sent to the temporal lobe, where they are processed. The temporal lobe analyzes the sounds of the language and determines the meaning of the words.

The frontal lobe then takes the meaning of the words and formulates a response. The frontal lobe also controls the muscles that we use to speak. The parietal lobe helps us to understand the meaning of the conversation by integrating information from the temporal lobe and the frontal lobe.

The Role of Emotion in Conversation

The limbic system is also involved in conversation. The limbic system is responsible for our emotions, and it plays a role in how we interpret the meaning of language. For example, if someone says something that makes us angry, the limbic system will activate the amygdala, which is a part of the brain that is involved in processing emotions. The amygdala will then send signals to the frontal lobe, which will influence how we respond to the person.

How Conversation Can Change Our Brains

Conversation can actually change our brains. When we have conversations, we are constantly learning and adapting. The more we talk to people, the better our brains become at processing language and understanding the meaning of words.

Conversation can also help to strengthen our social bonds. When we talk to people, we release oxytocin, which is a hormone that is involved in bonding and trust. Oxytocin helps us to feel connected to others, and it can make us more likely to cooperate and help each other.

Basically, keep on talking to people even if you don’t want to because its good for you! Grab a cup of coffee and just embrace a conversation :)

A steaming cup of LOCAL coffee is a welcome amenity for any guest, and a well-stocked coffee station can be a thoughtful touch that shows you care about their experience. But where do you begin? This guide will walk you through everything you need to know to create a coffee station that is both inviting and functional for your short-term rental guests.

The Benefits of a Coffee Station

There are many benefits to providing a coffee station for your guests. First and foremost, it shows that you've considered their needs and want to make their stay enjoyable. Since a majority of Americans drink this beautiful dark liquid, you are starting out meeting their needs! A coffee station can also:

Enhance the guest experience: A cup of coffee in the morning can help guests feel refreshed and ready to tackle the day.

Leave a positive impression: A well-stocked coffee station shows that you've paid attention to the details and that you care about your guests' comfort.

Contribute to better reviews: Guests who appreciate the little things, like a coffee station, are more likely to leave positive reviews.

Choosing the Right Coffee Maker

The type of coffee maker you choose will depend on your budget and your guests' preferences. Here are a few popular options to consider:

Drip Coffee Maker: A drip coffee maker is a classic and affordable option. It's easy to use and can brew a pot of coffee in minutes.

French Press: A French press brews a richer cup of coffee than a drip coffee maker. However, it requires a bit more effort to use and may not be suitable for all guests. If you choose to go with a French press, be sure to include a manual with instructions.

Bialetti Express Moka Pot: This stovetop option is a great way to make a strong cup of espresso. It's a more affordable alternative to an espresso machine, but it may not be familiar to all guests.

High-End Espresso Machine: If you want to offer your guests the ultimate coffee experience, you can consider investing in a high-end espresso machine. However, this is the most expensive option and may not be necessary for all rentals.

Other Essential Elements

In addition to a coffee maker, you'll also need to provide a variety of other items to make your coffee station complete. Here's a list of essentials:

Coffee: This goes without saying! Offer a variety of coffee beans or pods to cater to different tastes.

Tea: Some guests may prefer tea over coffee. Despite my avid love for coffee, sometimes in the evenings I just want a mint tea, so you may want to offer a selection of teas as well.

Mugs: Provide a variety of mugs in different sizes. If your guests gravitate to one in particular, it will go a long way in cementing that experience for them as a memorable one.

Filters: If you're using a drip coffee maker, be sure to provide filters if the coffee maker doesn't have one built in.

Creamer: Some guests like to add creamer to their coffee.

Sugar: Provide sugar packets or a sugar bowl. There are also some sugar alternatives out there which don't spike blood sugar, like Monkfruit.

Spoons: Don't forget the spoons! Those additional contents have to be mixed in somehow.

Design Tips

Once you've gathered all the essentials, it's time to think about the design of your coffee station. Here are a few tips:

Keep it organized: A cluttered coffee station will look messy and be uninviting. Use trays, canisters, and organizers to keep things tidy.

Consider space: If you have a small kitchen, you may need to get creative with your coffee station layout. A tiered tray can be a great way to save space. Or, maybe consider having a separate cart or small island on which you can place that most coveted of coffee stations!

Add personality: Don't be afraid to add a personal touch to your coffee station. This could include a decorative sign, a bowl of fresh fruit, or a vase of flowers.

By following these tips, you can create a coffee station that is both functional and inviting for your short-term rental guests.

Additional Tips

If you have the space, include a milk frother for guests who enjoy lattes or cappuccinos.

Provide a carafe or thermal pot to keep coffee hot for longer periods.

Leave a welcome note with instructions on how to use the coffee maker.

By following these additional tips, you can ensure that your coffee station is a truly top-notch amenity for your guests.

If you're in the mood for a coffee with a twist, the Lemongrass Gogulope might be just what you need. Inspired by the vibrant, citrusy notes of lemongrass, this pour-over recipe adds a refreshing touch of lemon peel directly into the coffee grounds, creating a bright and smooth brew that’s as revitalizing as it is caffeine-free.

Ingredients:

20 grams of ground decaf coffee (medium-fine grind)

300 grams of water (just below boiling, around 200°F)

Fresh lemon peel

Instructions:

Prepare Your Pour-Over Setup: Place a filter in your dripper, rinse it with hot water, and discard the rinse water.

Add Coffee Grounds: Measure and add 20 grams of coffee to the dripper. Give it a gentle shake to level the grounds.

Add Lemon Peel: Place a piece of fresh lemon peel directly into the coffee grounds. The peel will infuse the coffee with citrus oils as it brews.

Bloom: Start by pouring a small amount of hot water (about 40 grams) over the grounds, making sure they’re evenly saturated. Allow the coffee to "bloom" for 30 seconds, releasing aromas and enhancing the final flavor.

Pour in Stages: Gradually add the remaining water in small circles over the grounds, pausing every 30 seconds until you’ve poured the full 300 grams.

Serve and Savor: Once brewing is complete, remove the lemon peel, pour your coffee, and enjoy!

Tasting Notes:
The Lemongrass Gogulope brings a hint of citrus brightness to each sip, infusing the coffee with a perfect balance of roasted undertones and refreshing lemon notes. It’s the ideal brew for an afternoon refresher or any time you crave a vibrant, satisfying cup without the caffeine!

The Story Behind Buck’s Coffee Co.

I recently started working with an executive coach.
(that's the Self domain—we’ll talk more about that later.)

The first assignment they gave me?
Write out my life story.

And let me tell you: it’s been a process.
Trying to make sense of your whole life—your influences, experiences, highs, lows—takes more than a blank page. It takes honesty. It takes time. It takes facing a few things you might rather skip.

But as I sifted through it all, one thing kept surfacing:

I was made for connecting.

That thread has run through everything—friendships, work, spiritual life. Whether it was connecting with people, or to a purpose, or just to the moment I was in... I’ve always longed to feel something real.

Of course, that didn’t mean I was perfect at it. The desire came early. The skill?
Let’s just say it’s been under constant development.

Why I Started Buck’s Coffee Co.

In 2023, I launched this company with one simple mission:

To bring you great coffee to help you do the connecting you were made to do.

Not just a quick cup. Not just a caffeine hit.
But something intentional. Slower. Anchored in presence.

Coffee has always been that for me—a rhythm that slows the noise, holds the space, and makes room for something deeper.

And I want Buck’s to offer that kind of experience—not just through what’s in your cup, but through what happens around it.

The Connect Five™ Framework

To guide this mission, I’ve been developing something called the 5x5 Connection Framework.

It’s built around two simple ideas:

Connection looks different in different areas of life

Connection is something we practice

Each week, I’ll be pairing one Life Domain with one Connection Practice, and reflecting on how we can live that out.

The 5 Life Domains:

Self – your inner world, growth, and identity

Relationships – family, friends, and close bonds

Work – how you show up in your vocation

Renewal – rest, play, creativity

Contribution – giving back, building community

The 5 Connection Practices:

Presence – being fully here

Curiosity – asking and wondering

Vulnerability – sharing openly

Gratitude – noticing and naming what matters

Support – showing up with care

It’s a simple matrix: 5 domains × 5 practices = 25 ways to deepen your connection.
Some pairings will hit close to home. Others might challenge you. But all of them are real.

What to Expect

These posts won’t be long.
They won’t be perfect.
They’ll just be a place to pause, reflect, and ask a better question about how we’re living and loving.

Some weeks I’ll share a story.
Other weeks, a prompt or practice.

But every post will point back to one simple belief:

You were made for connection. And the world is better when you live that way.

Thanks for being here.

– Buck

For these initial posts, I’ll do my best to share how I’m thinking about the life domains and connection practices. In this first one, we’re exploring the domain of Self and the practice of Presence.

As a quick recap:

Self is your inner world—your thoughts, emotions, values, and identity.

Presence is being fully here—wherever here is.

I wish I could say this never happened, but there have been more times than I care to admit when my wife has leaned in and asked, “Are you okay?” I actually appreciate that part. The part I’m not proud of is my usual response: “I’m fine.” And if I’m honest, I wasn’t. Not really.

Still, I’m grateful for her question. It always invites me to pause and reconnect—to check in with what I’m thinking and feeling, and to make a shift if needed. It reminds me that being present starts with being honest. I’m still learning how to receive that question openly and quickly, without defensiveness. Because truthfully, I would rather be present than disconnected. I would rather be aware of what’s happening in and around me than checked out or running on autopilot.

Sometimes, being present means catching myself in the swirl of internal noise before it turns into external distance. It means choosing to stop, breathe, and feel what’s going on—without rushing to fix it.

Lately, I’ve found that one of the simplest ways I return to presence is through a cup of coffee. It might sound small, but it helps if you let it. In the year after graduating college I would use that brew time to scoop a handful of M&Ms into my mouth in the morning.....not a great way to use that time. But now I let the warmth of the mug in my hands, the rhythm of the pour, and the aroma guide me into a moment to pause, to slow down, to settle into myself.

Presence doesn’t require perfection—it just asks us to return. Again and again.

What’s one small ritual that helps you return to yourself today?

Curiosity is more than a nice idea—it’s how we grow. In this post, I share how a music debate turned into a reminder about fear, courage, and the beauty of learning. Plus, the real story of how Buck’s Coffee got started.

On a recent family vacation, we found ourselves in a lively conversation about music. The question on the table: Should you expand your musical horizons, or stick with what you love? We encouraged my father-in-law to give Imagine Dragons a listen—arguing they’re diverse, clean, and surprisingly versatile.

He smiled and pushed back. For him, there’s still a whole world to explore within the genre he already loves—think Crosby, Stills, and Nash.

At the heart of the exchange wasn’t really music—it was curiosity. The willingness to ask, wonder, and engage with something new. And his perspective reminded me: curiosity doesn’t always mean looking outward. Sometimes, it means looking deeper into what we already have… or into who we already are.

Did you know our brains are actually wired for curiosity? When we explore and learn, our reward system lights up. Dopamine is released. Our minds and bodies like curiosity.

So why do we so often resist it?

That’s a question I’ve had to sit with. For me, it usually comes down to fear—of failure, of looking foolish, of being rejected. It’s easier to stay in the familiar than to risk the unknown.

When I launched Buck’s Coffee Co.—
…well, let’s be honest. When my wife launched Buck’s Coffee Co., we were literally in the car. She took my phone, posted a few photos, and introduced me to the world. I was dragging my feet, caught in fear of what might go wrong. She gave me a gentle shove. And here we are.

I’m loving it now. I love exploring different coffees, running into real business problems, and growing through it all. Curiosity is what keeps this work fun, and it’s what keeps me learning—not just about coffee, but about myself.

Coffee itself invites curiosity. The more I roast, the more I discover how a single origin can taste completely different based on roast level, brew method, or even the water you use. It’s a never-ending invitation to learn, experiment, and wonder. And for me, it’s become one of the most life-giving ways to practice curiosity.

What about you?

What keeps you from being curious about the world around you—and what helps you step into it anyway?

Vulnerability is where growth begins. In this post, I share how a Rwandan Peaberry forced me to admit I didn’t have it all figured out—and how that led to better roasting, and a better me.

Life Domain: Self · Practice: Vulnerability

When breaking in a coffee roaster, you have to season it. The seasoning process scrubs the drum, removes the manufacturing oils, and coats it with coffee oils to prepare for real roasting. The method I used for seasoning? It became my go-to roasting method.

And for a while—it worked. I started to believe it was the magic way to roast coffee. No matter what beans I used, it delivered consistent, decent results. That is, until it didn’t.

It hit a wall with a beautiful Rwandan Peaberry. Grassy notes persisted no matter what I did. At first, I brushed it off. Surely this was a one-off. A fluke. But it wasn’t. The truth was: my trusty method wasn’t enough for every coffee.

I had to come to grips with the reality that I needed to grow. What got me here wasn’t going to get me where I wanted to go.

But that realization came with a choice. Would I admit that I wasn’t perfect and didn’t have it all figured out? Or would I double down and try to look like I knew what I was doing?

That’s the crossroads of vulnerability.

As Brené Brown puts it, “Vulnerability is the birthplace of innovation, creativity, and change.”
It’s also the uncomfortable space where we admit we’re still learning—even if people are watching.

For me, that meant choosing growth over ego. It meant owning that I didn’t have all the answers, and letting that be okay. It meant experimenting with new methods, failing again, and slowly getting better. I still don’t have it all figured out. But I roast differently now—because I let that Peaberry teach me.

When faced with that same dilemma, what do you choose?

Do you hide behind what’s worked—or are you willing to step into the unknown to grow?

Gratitude isn’t always loud. Sometimes it looks like a simple burlap sack—the first coffee bag I ever bought. In this post, I reflect on how small beginnings, if not celebrated, can get lost in the noise of comparison—and how gratitude helps us see clearly...

Life Domain: Self · Practice: Gratitude

I’ve held onto the first sack of coffee I ever purchased. It’s nothing special on the surface—just a simple burlap bag. The coffee it held is long gone. But that sack? It’s not just fabric. It’s a reminder. A marker of where things started.

While sackcloth might traditionally carry connotations of mourning or loss, for me, it’s become a source of gratitude.

Have you ever heard the phrase, “Do not despise small beginnings”? It’s a line from the Bible—regardless of what you think about the source, there’s a deep truth packed into it.

Think about this:
Years ago, Sia won the Grammy for Best New Artist. But in her acceptance speech, she said something like, “I’m not new. I’ve been working for more than a decade.” And yet, only now was the world taking notice.

Or how about in today’s world of influencers and startups? You see someone blow up on Instagram or launch what seems like an overnight success—and you think, Wow, they’re huge. But what you don’t see is the money they poured into advertising… or the years of behind-the-scenes effort.

None of this is to cast shade—it’s to say: comparison will rob you of gratitude every time.

When I was recently working on writing out my life story, I saw a theme emerge: I spent a long time believing I wasn’t as smart as others. That mindset quietly shaped so much of my early life. Instead of celebrating my own strengths, I envied what I lacked.

Even now, with Buck’s Coffee, I sometimes catch myself doing the same thing—looking outward at other people’s highlight reels and overlooking my own progress. But that’s where the burlap sack comes in.

It brings me back to gratitude. Back to what’s real.

And here’s the science behind it:
Practicing gratitude actually rewires your brain. It activates reward centers, releases dopamine and serotonin, and helps lower stress. Over time, it builds resilience and trains you to see life through a lens of abundance, not lack.

That sack reminds me that we started somewhere small—and we’re still going.

I want to keep looking back with thankfulness… and looking forward with hope.

What’s one small object, moment, or memory that reminds you to be grateful?
Grab a cup of coffee, sit with it for a minute, and let it shape your perspective.

Life Domain: Self · Practice: Support

A couple of years ago, I went to a Labcorp facility for a blood draw. Honestly, I didn’t go because I was concerned about my health—I went because it earned me a discount on my monthly insurance premium.

I don’t mind getting poked with a needle, and a discount is a nice perk. But the truth is, if that incentive hadn’t been there, I probably wouldn’t have gone. That kind of basic self-care just isn’t something I naturally prioritize.

But that visit turned out to be more important than I expected.

I noticed something in my blood work: my platelet count was low. The year before—when I had also done the draw solely for the discount—the same thing showed up. At the time, I brushed it off. But when it happened again, it was clear this wasn’t a one-off. I’ve since been put under care to help prevent my body from destroying too many platelets.

And it hit me: if I hadn’t taken the step to support my health—however reluctantly—I wouldn’t have caught something that needed real attention.

We often treat self-care like a luxury. Like something we’ll get to after we handle everything else. But everything—everything—needs maintenance.

Even your coffee maker.

Over time, the minerals in your water build up inside the machine. The heating and cooling process leaves behind a film, especially in the water well, that affects both function and taste. Descaling isn’t a glamorous task, but it’s necessary. Skip it long enough, and you’ll notice the difference in your cup.

Support isn’t always visible. It’s not flashy. But it makes everything else possible.

This post is part of the Self Domain series. If you’ve been reading along, maybe something’s surfaced—a habit you need to change, a need you’ve ignored, a check-up you’ve postponed.

Are you putting it off? Or are you making a plan to show up for yourself?

Because when you’re supported—when your mind, body, and spirit are healthy—you’re better able to connect with your life and the people in it.

What’s one small thing you can do this week to support yourself?
